ORIGIN

Why Ugandan
coffee.

Africa's leading coffee-producing nation by volume, and one of the most respected origins by cup quality. Ugandan coffee is shaped by geography, tradition, and generations of expertise.

Coffee cultivated across Uganda's highland sub-regions.

Rich Volcanic Soils

Mineral-rich soils from Uganda's volcanic highlands produce beans of exceptional density and complexity.

High Altitude

Elevations of 1,200–2,300m slow cherry maturation, concentrating sugars and aroma compounds.

Ideal Climate

Bimodal rainfall and consistent temperatures create two reliable harvest seasons per year.

Arabica & Robusta

Uganda is one of the few origins producing world-class beans of both species in commercial volume.

Sustainable Farming

Smallholder-led production with a long tradition of shade-grown, intercropped coffee.

Export Quality

Recognized internationally for consistency, grade, and reliable delivery windows.

TERROIR

A country built for coffee.

Uganda sits on the equator with highlands rising above 2,000 metres. The combination of altitude, volcanic soil and bimodal rainfall creates growing conditions that only a handful of countries in the world share.

Altitude

1,000 – 2,300 m across the coffee belts, slowing cherry maturation and building sugar density.

Bimodal rainfall

Two distinct wet seasons per year giving Uganda two reliable harvests — a key export advantage.

Equatorial climate

Consistent 15–28°C temperatures year-round with strong equatorial sunlight and cool highland nights.

Volcanic soils

Rich, well-drained volcanic soils in Elgon, Rwenzori and the Great Lakes belt feed exceptionally healthy trees.

REGIONAL PROFILES

Five distinct coffee origins.

ARABICA

Bugisu / Mount Elgon

ALTITUDE
1,500 – 2,300 m
HARVEST
October – March
CUP PROFILE

Bright acidity, wine-like body, chocolate and citrus notes.

Grown on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda, Bugisu is the country's flagship Arabica region. Volcanic soils and high elevation produce dense, complex beans prized by specialty roasters worldwide.

ARABICA

Rwenzori

ALTITUDE
1,400 – 2,000 m
HARVEST
April – July
CUP PROFILE

Balanced sweetness, medium body, floral and citrus notes.

The 'Mountains of the Moon' in western Uganda produce a distinctive Arabica with clean acidity and floral aromatics. Shade-grown by smallholder farmers on the eastern foothills.

ARABICA & ROBUSTA

West Nile

ALTITUDE
1,200 – 1,800 m
HARVEST
October – January
CUP PROFILE

Full body, cocoa and nutty character with gentle acidity.

A rising origin in Uganda's northwest, West Nile produces both Arabica and high-quality Robusta. Warm days and cool nights build sugar concentration in the cherry.

ROBUSTA

Central & Lake Victoria Crescent

ALTITUDE
1,000 – 1,400 m
HARVEST
November – February
CUP PROFILE

Heavy body, low acidity, dark chocolate and earthy notes.

Uganda's Robusta heartland — the crescent around Lake Victoria produces the deep, full-bodied Robusta used in premium espresso blends across Europe and the Middle East.

ARABICA

South Western

ALTITUDE
1,500 – 2,100 m
HARVEST
May – August
CUP PROFILE

Clean cup, bright acidity, delicate floral and berry notes.

Kigezi and neighbouring highlands near Uganda's border with Rwanda produce an elegant Arabica that is increasingly featured in single-origin specialty programs.

HARVEST CALENDAR

Two harvests, year-round supply.

Uganda's bimodal rainfall gives us two main harvest windows per year — meaning fresh crop is available almost every month somewhere in the country.
